I will be honest, I used to hate the scent of lavender! I am pretty sure I was scarred during childhood by the dozens and dozens of cheap lavender body washes and lotions I would get every Christmas. That and Coconut Lime Verbena would soon turn me off for a long, long time. But when I went to Croatia last Summer, all of that changed. I smelled real, fresh lavender flowers and real lavender essential oils. They smelled completely different and immediately calmed my senses and made me feel just wonderful!
Ever since my trip to Europe, I have incorporated lavender essential oil into so many bath, beauty and home products. I make a spray for my sheets and pillows at night to ease tension and promote a calming and restful sleep.
For me, as a mom of two little ones, this was really important. Not only are our minds constantly clogged up as worrying and stressed out parents, but as we age, our bodies slow the production of melatonin, which is the hormone that helps regulate your sleep cycles. Not only was this possibly messing with my sleep, but multiple night-time wake-up sessions from my infant took a huge toll on my circadian rhythm and sleep cycles. A proper night’s sleep is crucial for long-term health and is often the first thing to go down the tubes!
Lavender is a flower that has been widely used around the world to facilitate with nervousness, stress and sleep troubles. Don’t worry, it isn’t going to leave you diving into your pillows head first like a sleeping pill would, but it will prepare your body when the time to sleep does arrive. I also add Young Living Stress Away essential oil to my spray because it adds a wonderful, vanilla lime calming scent and also helps to reduce mental rigidity and restore equilibrium. Stress Away can help induce relaxation and reduce occasional nervous tension. You can learn more about essential oils by visiting my Essential Oils page.
Essential Oil Safety Precautions
Essential oils have incredible health benefits and are derived from nature, but that does not mean you should not take caution when using them. Essential oils are incredibly powerful, even just a few drops. You should never use essential oils undiluted unless under the supervision of a professional highly trained in the use of essential oils. Also if you are pregnant or have small pets (mainly cats), you should use caution when using essential oils. It is also important that you use high quality essential oils that are properly sourced and produced and do not have synthetic fillers or ingredients. You can read more about the essential oils that passed my test on my Essential Oils page.
DIY Sweet Dreams Lavender Vanilla Linen Spray
Makes 2 ounces
- Small jar with tight-fitting lid
- 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) witch hazel
- 10 drops Young Living Lavender essential oil
- 5 drops Young Living Stress Away essential oil
- 3 ounces (6 tablespoons) water
- Small funnel
- Spray bottle (like this one)
In a jar or container with a lid, combine the witch hazel lavender and Stress Away essential oils. Place the lid on tightly and shake well for 30 seconds to combine the witch hazel and oils. Add the water. Use a funnel and pour mixture into your spray bottle. Again, I recommend these blue glass spray bottles because the glass won’t interact with the oils and the dark tint will help with any sun or UV rays making their way into your product.
Spray on your pillows, sheets and pillows and have plenty of sweet dreams!
