I promise you, this testimony will not be as shallow as the title leads it to be.
About a year ago, I looked in the mirror. I mean, REALLY looked in the mirror. I had my blinds wide open with the sun shining right on my face.
I looked horrible.
I had dark, dark circles under my eyes. I had sun spots and an the worst uneven complexion I had ever seen.
I looked old. I looked tired. I looked really, really haggard. This is the best picture I could find that I didn’t delete immediately after taking.
I was 26 years old by the way. In the prime of my life. I wasn’t pushing 50 or even creeping up on 40. I was in my mid-twenties and was NOT supposed to be looking like this.
My first thought was to immediately go out and buy a ridiculously expensive face cream to start lightening my dark spots. Bleaching them, really. But I quickly snapped back to reality.
I wasn’t that girl anymore that masks the symptoms without treating the cause, and I wasn’t that girl who would use really harsh chemicals on my skin just to look better.
Something was wrong. As much as I thought I was taking care of my body, eating right and eliminating toxins from my world…something was wrong. And it was showing all over my face.
I could not. I WOULD not, post a picture without using a filter. I had to artificially brighten my face so the sun spots and the dark circles would just wash away.
Soon, even filters weren’t enough. I was using transformation apps that literally transformed my blemishes into beautiful, smooth, glistening skin.
But it was fake. It wasn’t me. It wasn’t even close to me.
I had to make some serious changes from the INSIDE, so it would show on the outside.
HOW I FINALLY WENT TO #NOFILTER
1. Supplemented Vitamin D.
I wrote an entire post about the benefits of vitamin D here. But in short, I found out that I was severely deficient in this essential vitamin. (Most Americans are) and it was impacting not only my mood, but my skin as well.
2. Bought Quality, Organic Skincare.
I never even really used a consistent skincare regimen on my face. Soap and water was the extent of it. I knew I needed to really start hydrating my skin and allowing it to be nourished by the right things. I bought Nourish Organics. Here are the two products I used together.
PURE HYDRATING ARGAN FACE SERUM
It claimed to deeply hydrate and replenish my skin, even skin tone and revitalize my complexion. I can tell you, hands down, that it did all of that for my skin.
The serum contains Moroccan Argan oil, packed with restorative omega fatty acids, Apricot kernel oil and Rosehip oil. My skin just drinks it all up. It needs it. An added bonus, the serum is Fragrance-Free. Alcohol-Free. Gluten-Free. Vegan. You can check out more about it here.
ULTRA-HYDRATING ORGANIC FACE CREAM
This baby contains Moroccan Argan oil that intensely hydrates and replenishes skin, pomegranate that firms and protects skin from environmental damage and acai that fights fine lines and reduces signs of stress and fatigue. This face cream is also Fragrance-Free. Alcohol-Free. Gluten-Free. Vegan. You can check out more about this one here.
If you really want to get serious about your skin, click on the set below it will take you to the site where you can purchase the complete facial line.
3.) DRANK MORE WATER
UGH! Drinking more water is said SO often and is so devastatingly under-acknowledged. Water is the most important element that your body needs to function optimally. My skin was not being hydrated. My body wasn’t not getting enough water. I WASN’T PEEING ENOUGH! I upped my water to a GALLON a day. I seriously needed it. I also felt more energy too when I drank more.
These three elements were the perfect combination for me. I hit the sweet spot for my skin, exactly what it needed. It’s important to take pictures of your skin if you’re trying a new regiment, just like it’s important to take pictures of your body when trying a new fitness routine. Sometimes we see much more in photos than we do in our day-to-day mirror reflections. It really hit me when I saw a picture of myself from months ago (which I hesitantly posted above) and then saw a picture I took recently with my son. (Posted below).
I can FINALLY feel comfortable posting pictures with #NOFILTER and it feels amazing.
What are you best natural skin care routines? What has worked best for you?
