We are all too familiar with that feeling. That feeling that starts out slow and weak and you kind of turn your head a little.
Am I getting sick? Maybe, maybe not??
Well, that little nagging feeling tugged on me the other day, and I instantly got annoyed. I mean, I devote my words to teaching how to boost our immune systems and how to stay well, and I am still the first one to get sick in the house! I was a little insulted. But, wrongfully so. I am human, just like everyone else, and yes, though rare, even those of us at the top of our wellness game get sick sometimes. And believe it or not, that’s actually a good thing.

Getting Sick Is Actually A Good Thing
As health conscious folks, we are constantly trying to find ways to prevent illness, especially in our children. But there are two very big problems with that. For one, if your child never gets sick, how are they supposed to build immunity naturally!? And secondly, there’s actually much more to it than that.
Allanah from yogayin.com explains a bit further. “When we get sick, our immune system is actively fighting a bug. And, while our system takes a beating in the beginning, our immune system actually learns from the experience, strengths itself, building a better defense against the next bug.
But even more importantly, for you to fall ill, your parasympathetic nervous system – the part of your nervous system that allows the body to relax and sleep – has to be working.
When we are very stressed, our body is a constant state of panic, triggering the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) and the adrenal glands. Those adrenals will continually pump cortisol throughout your body, making it very difficult for your immune system to fight. in the case of my student, he was in a constant state of stress, particularly given his work as a lawyer – so apart from our yoga class, he was never relaxed.
Think about it. How many times have you, or someone you know, been under huge pressure, then taken a break or a holiday – only to fall ill after the first few days? It’s because your body has been allowed to relax, your parasympathetic has been activated, your immune system has become free to fight, and now you are forced to rest. annoying? Sure. But absolutely necessary.”
So let’s switch our thinking a bit to not how we can 100% prevent every single illness, but how we can combat that sickness like a boss and get through it as strong and as gracefully as possible. If we have strong immune systems and are treating our bodies right, the illness isn’t going to knock us down as hard and as long as it would in someone who doesn’t take care of all those things. Because let’s be honest, many of us are parents, and we just don’t have time to be down for the count for a week straight!
And in my experience, I said to Mr. Cold, “Okay. Challenge accepted.” and kicked that bad boy to the curb before it even had a CHANCE! And I will tell you just how I did it.
How To Kick A Cold In Just One Day
Oh yes, I talk all about chlorella in a post here. I take it daily, as it increases those white and red blood cells to fight any illness that comes up. Truth be told, I even has a physical exam while taking chlorella and the doctor said I must have a urinary tract infection because I had an abundance of white blood cells in my urine. I said, “doc, I don’t have a UTI. I would know if I did.” He suggested I go on antibiotics while the tests come back because it was nearing the weekend and he didn’t want me to be struck in pain. Well, let me tell ya, I don’t take antibiotics unless crucially necessary (Haven’t had to in well over a decade) and I DEFINITELY don’t take antibiotics on a “maybe” basis. Turns out, test was negative. no infection, doc. I told ya!
But back to chlorella. I have been in maintenance mode only take one tablet a day. The serving recommendations are up to 10-20 tablets a day with some brands! So what I did when I felt illness coming on was upped my chlorella. Fight, chlorella, fight! I use this brand.
My husband just got some blood work and it turned out he was vitamin D deficient. Can I tell you that I actually took offense to that to? I know, I’m a little over-sensitive, but my families health is seriously my priority! Anyway, we got Live Wise Vitamin D3 – K2 (combine the two for best absorption!) from Amazon and started administering to the whole family. Vitamin D is really vital for overall wellness. I talk about it more depth here. We don’t supplement in the summer time because we’re always outside, but in the Winter time, it’s important for us. I upped my vitamin D significantly during the first signs of my cold.
I used diluted peppermint essential oil on my neck and feet to open up my lymphatic system. It felt really good to say the least! I also added a few drops of Frankincense to unscented, paraben free lotion and rubbed along my lymph nodes and neck. I also diffused thieves oil, a known germ destroyer, in a diffuser for 20-30 minute intervals. Always consult an aromatherapist or other professional before using essential oils, especially on children. They are powerful and not suitable for all ages.
Yep, onions. To be honest, I’m all about natural healing, but that onion in the room/in the socks thing really kind of made me go, “ehhh….”. I wasn’t buying it. Even though I know onions are very good for the system, I couldn’t find one solitary piece of evidence supporting the fact that cut up onions help or “absorb” the illness. But for this cold, I was pulling out all the stops. I had something to prove to myself. I cut up an onion and put it in my son’s room along with a salt water diffuser with a little lavender essential oil in it. I also put cut onions on the bottoms of my feet and in my socks over night.
I’m going to be honest, I wasn’t congested the entire night. I woke up feeling clearer. My son, who had a running nose prior to bed time, was completely clear the entire night. I expected to be woken up several times due to his congestion, but I got nothin.
We both woke up feeling completely restored and his runny nose and congestion was completely gone.
Nature’s antibiotic! Seriously, it is. Whether you have a bacterial or viral infection, garlic does not judge! It attacks both. It’s powerful and doesn’t have any adverse side effects (other than smelling like garlic and potentially having garlic breath). I chopped up two whole cloves and took them down like pills.
Wanting to reset your immune system? This cider might be a little hard to get down, but it really puffs up your defenses. It’s an apple cider vinegar infusion that contains powerful immune-boosting, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-viral qualities to boost your immune system.
I took two small shots of this fire cider! You can check out more about Fire Cider here.
The majority of our immune systems lives in our guts. For maintenance, I only take one probiotic a day. But when illness comes on, I up my probiotics so I can really inundate my gut with much needed good gut bacteria. Go, good bacteria, go! I have used a few different brands for myself and my family. I like hyperbiotics, PRO-Kids , mainly for my son, because it has a nice tasting chewable for him and I am now on Klaire Labs for myself and my infant daughter because they have a powder one for her.
Lemon & Ginger
I added fresh lemon and ginger to my teas. Both lemon and ginger are great for cleansing out the toxins and facilitating a PH friendly environment conducive for optimal wellness.
Of course! Many of you know that I sell elderberry syrup kits all day, every day. So of course I ran to my berries and spices and whipped up a fresh batch for my own family. My kids love it, even though my son calls it “Elevator syrup”. Close enough, right? I talk all about the powerful benefits of elderberry syrup here and you can get a kit of your own here.
Well known for it’s anti-bacterial and healing properties, this honey is your best friend during an illness. I mixed it into my tea and even mixed it with cinnamon on a spoon and gulped it down! I use Wedderspoon Organic Yes, it’s worth the price. Not all honey is created equal!
This may seem like a lot, but if you’re going to tackle a cold, you have to give it 100%! I used all of these remedies during day one of my cold and the result was that….there wasn’t a day two! Not the same remedies will work for every single person, but many of these remedies can only help, not hurt, and can be found in your kitchen pantry at home. Never underestimate the power of what nature has provided to us.
Stay well, my friends!
