Living the conscience life isn’t easy when you’re a parent. You have to constantly think about the food going into your child’s mouth, the products going on to their skin and the information going into their heads!
Chemicals are everywhere, and although they are often present in small amounts in our foods and personal care products, these “trace amounts” add up, and up, and up, and I think you get the point. There are no studies done on the accumulation of all the different chemicals one person ingests on a daily basis and what type of harmful effects those build-ups of toxins can have on the human body.
But luckily, many of us have already gotten clued in on what happens to our bodies when they aren’t performing optimally, because our bodies let us know through many, many signs. Sickness, bloating, anxiety, migraines, digestive issues, diarrhea, constipation, eczema, mood imbalances and depression just to name a few. These are all ways our bodies are telling us to clear out the toxins!
Children may not be able to communicate these issues as effectively as adults would. The signs may be more attitude and behaviorally based as well as digestive issues and skin conditions. There are many ways to reduce your child’s toxic load from the beginning of their life and as an on-going effort on a daily basis to keep them healthy and strong.

How To Reduce Your Child’s Toxic Load
Reduce Or Omit Vaccinations
Reducing, omitting, or at least delaying the amount of vaccines given to your child can dramatically reduce their toxic load. From birth to age 6, children are given 49 doses of foreign antigens. Vaccine toxins, along with the rapid introduction of antigens to the young system (that would never happen naturally in nature) have been scientifically linked to a significant increase in allergies, asthma, auto-immune disease, chronic illness, auto-immune disease, neurological damage, autism, sudden infant death and more. I talk more in depth about vaccines here and posted a visual video of my daughter and vaccine doses here.
Kick Plastic To The Curb
Even the doted “BPA FREE” plastic cups, straws, plastic wrap and storage containers often still contain the next worst chemical, Bisphenol S (BPS) along with other harmful chemical compounds. Both BPA and BPS are synthetic chemicals that disrupt the body’s hormone system, brain and prostate system. Many companies do not have to tell you which chemicals are in their products. So the best thing to do is to just ditch them all.
Try to replace plastic cups with glass, silicone or stainless steel. We really love Klean Kanteen brand for sippy cups and sports bottles.
Stick To Water or 100% Juice
To hydrate your little ones, filtered, fluoride-free water is your best option. You can make it a bit more tasty by adding fresh squeezed organic lemon, lime or grapefruit juice. If your little one must have juice, make sure it’s 100% juice and does not include artificial dyes like yellow 5 and 6 and red 40, that have all been linked to behavioral upset. Also look out for high fructose corn syrup and artificial sweeteners (sucralose and aspartame are most common).
The harmful pesticides used in “conventional” or genetically modified fruits and vegetables really do add up. If we could only physically see what we ingest right along with those pesticides, we would most likely be terrified. Pesticides have been linked to everything from obesity and diabetes to cancer, infertility and Parkinson’s disease. These ailments don’t happen immediately, they happen over years and years and years of toxic pesticide ingestion. I talk more about pesticides in this post, “Why can’t I just wash my produce?”. Start your little ones with the healthiest start while they are young. Our bodies can “handle” a lot of abuse, but they will eventually reach their breaking point if the cycle doesn’t end. To reduce our toxic load and function as well as we should, go organic.
For the toxins we can’t always tackle, add in a detox bath to your little one’s monthly or bi-monthly routine. Adding epsom salt , bentonite clay, and diluted essential oils like lemon, rosemary or lavender to bath water can not only make a peaceful bath time experience, but a cleansing one!
Reduce EMF exposure
I know, it sometimes seems inevitable with all of the computers, tablets, cell phones and wireless everything floating around, but it’s really important to reduce our exposure to electromagentic fields. Although there is not much conclusive evidence out there yet on health concerns, there is a growing body of scientific evidence showing that too much EMF exposure can be harmful to our health. So much so that the World Health Organization classified EMFs as “possibly carcinogenic to humans” back in 2011. The truth is, we don’t know. Because we are in a technology driven generation, that has never been this way before! All of this technology is so very new, and the health effects of it all on humans has really yet to be determined. As always, we tend to err with caution, because we would rather be safe than sorry. Can The Colors
Artificial dyes have been under serious scrutiny lately and have been linked to a plethora of health concerns such as ADHD and hyperactivity. This is no easy task. Many popular candies, drinks, popsicles, puddings, yogurts, gums, boxed mac n’ cheeses, baking mixes, pickles, meats, fruits, sauces and chips contain ingredients such as Yellow #5, Blue #1, and Red #40 – three of the most popular FDA-permitted ones. As if that’s not enough, the dye in our day isn’t limited to food. Chances are, if you take vitamins, use cough syrup, brush your teeth, wash your hands, shampoo your hair, launder your clothing and moisturize your lips on a daily basis — you come into contact with artificial dyes quite frequently. Rewind The Refined Sugars
Sugars, especially white refined sugars wreak havoc on bodies, especially tiny ones. They not only affect mood and behavior, disease and illness is fueled by an acidic, sugar-based environment. Sugar is not only toxic to the system, but sugar also impacts the immune system, making your little one unable to fight germs as effectively following a sugar rush as a sugar free body would be able to. Read more here. Stick to natural sugars found in fruit in moderation for your child’s sweet tooth.
Soon, I promise you that these practices will become second nature in your home. You will feel so much better knowing that your child’s system is functioning at a gunk-free, toxin free level. Health and happiness to you and yours.
