The Greeks get it right, a lot of the time! I mean, the standard Mediterranean diet varies greatly from the standard American diet. When you follow a Mediterranean diet you will usually find yourself eating primarily plant-based foods such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts. In the Mediterranean, butters are usually substituted for healthy fats, such as olive oil and herbs and spices are often used instead of salt to flavor foods. That’s what I am talking about!
Since unfortunately I don’t live in Greece, I will have to make do with Greek salads, Gyros and Mediterranean chicken dishes. When you whip up this super easy and healthy Tzatziki dip, you can use it on all of these types of dishes. It is such a cool, refreshing dip with a whole lot of flavor too, which is why I really love it.
Traditional Tzatziki takes a bit more time and labor. There a lot of peeling, seeding, and straining the cucumbers along with marinating. This is all fine and dandy, but I don’t usually have time for a long drawn out process, so this recipe is quick and easy and tastes great too!
History Of Tzatziki
Tzatziki originated from Armenia, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Turkey and is made of salted strained yogurt (usually from sheep or goat milk) or diluted yogurt mixed with cucumbers, garlic, salt, olive oil, sometimes with vinegar or lemon juice, and some herbs like dill, mint, parsley, thyme etc It is always served cold. Traditionally, the yogurt is strained by placing it into a cloth such as a handkerchief or cheesecloth and suspending it over a bowl or sink for a several hours. This is done so most of the liquid drains from the yogurt, which creates a smooth creamy texture in the sauce and prevents it from becoming too watery. A thick sauce is needed for the various applications in which it is used. This recipe is going to be quick and easy!
